Marie comes originally from the Sheep Springs area of the Reservation but now lives near Burnham, N. M. Most of her family are artists, the male members express their artistry via the medium of sandpainting and the females via weaving. Marie is best known for her sculpture and weaving, but she is a painter as well. As a sculptor, she has been successful in developing a distinctive style of bear fetish. Her usual medium is alabaster. As a weaver, she specializes in the new Burnham regional style as do her sisters, Lorene, Linda, and Esther. All of the sisters were/are influenced by the style of Bobby Johnson a Navajo artist with whom Marie lived until his untimely death in 1989. Bobby is also the father of Marie's children Brandon (born in 1986) and Amanda (born in 1989). Marie also has an older daughter (born in 1978) named Tanya Hogue. Marie now lives and works with Bobby's younger brother Larry Johnson.
