Lula Bia Brown

Date of Birth: about 1950
Reside near the Crystal area of the Navajo Reservation
(Navajo, NM)

Lula Brown has been working at the loom for most of her life. Lula weaves almost exclusively miniatures (about 2" X 4"), working with many of the regional styles and historic revival designs in her pieces. She has been winning First Place awards at the Gallup Ceremonial since 1974; her most recent was in 1995 for a miniature Storm Pattern. Lula learned to weave from her aunt Della Woody, and her mother, Betty Bia, who is now deceased. Lula is the oldest of her sisters who are also adept at creating miniature Navajo textiles. Lula's sister, Ella Yazzie weaves regularly, as does Louise Bia Yazzie, who lives with their father Kee Bia. Lula has another sister, Elouise who also weaves in miniature, and she lives near Lula in the town of Navajo. Lula and her husband Herman Brown, (who has a unique flair for color in his weavings) have several children, including Derwin, Shawnelle and Jethro.
