Ruby is known for her Navajo folk art animals. She usually creates small sheep and goats, using a wood frame and gluing and nailing on cured pelts. The pelts are first washed and scraped clean, and soaked in a commercial salt-tanning solution. They are then hung out on a clothes line to dry. The finished animal has the natural color of the wool, and frequently Ruby will attach billy goat or ram horns. Ruby's parents, Jimmy and Irene Growler, as well as her brother, Ray Growler, all create these whimsical animals.
