Arthur Yazzie

Date of Birth: About 1950
Resides in the Four Corners area
of the Navajo Reservation
(Shiprock, NM)

Arthur has been a jack-of-all-trades in his life, but since about 1990 he has made sculpting his forte. His family, including his wife Christine, two boys born about 1980 and 1985, and a few nephews are involved in this family-run business. They gather the native alabaster stone for his carvings (rather than purchasing the raw material), help with the rough carving, and also haul his sculptures to the galleries that carry his work. Arthur has become well known for his stylized bear sculptures. They have a universal appeal with decorations of turquoise and scenes of Navajo life. One of Arthur's cousins is Richard Silver (who is also a sculptor) and is married to Stella Johnson, the sister of the well-known artist Bobby Johnson.
