Robert is a master Navajo silver and goldsmith who is producing beautiful Navajo jewelry rooted in the traditional style. He has achieved a level of skill in jewelry making that has won him many awards at various art competitions, including First Prize in 1993 and again in 1994 at the Heard Museum Guilds Indian Fair in Phoenix. He also won several first places and a Best of Division in 1996 a the Santa Fe Indian Market.
Robert was raised on the Navajo Reservation (north of Holbrook, at Indian Wells, Arizona) in a traditional family - his father was both a medicine man and a silversmith, and his mother was a weaver. Robert is the third oldest of eight children (he has four sisters and three brothers). All four of the boys, Herbert, Leonard and Terry as well as Robert, are now well-known smiths. Robert began to create jewelry under his fathers tutelage when he was 10 years old, in 1971. He and his wife Christine now have three children of their own; Cheryl born in 1984, and Sean born in 1992, and Chantel born in 1995.
Robert has used a variety of stones and techniques over the years, but his work has moved to a clean contemporary look. He enjoys working with gold, and also combining gold with sterling silver. Robert's motifs are frequently inspired by his upbringing; he creates designs based on the life and culture of his people, the "Dine". Robert is also a positive role model for young Native Americans, and is always encouraging them to strive to keep their dreams and their culture as he has.
