Born 2 December 1962
Alan Cruz's paintings and carvings evoke his feel for his Hopi and San Juan Pueblo backgrounds. He carves each kachina doll from a single piece of driftwood, then enhances its individuality by burning in details and designs. Alan also interprets his homeland and religious belief in acrylic and mixed media collages on canvas and paper.
Alan began drawing in the First Grade and by High School had commenced painting and carving. He refined his skills at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work has been exhibited at the First State Bank of Taos, The Rainbow Man Gallery in Santa Fe, and the Museum of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. And now Cristof's Gallery in Santa Fe.
In 1992, Alan's painting was included in "Tewa Thoughts and Expressions", a traveling exhibit of art from the six Tewa-speaking pueblos of northern New Mexico.
