Fernanda Honanie

Born approximately 1958
Resides on the Hopi
(Kykotsmovi, AZ)

Fernanda is a member of the Water Clan and began to learn the art of Hopi flat coil basket weaving from her mother Kathleen Honanie at the age of 10. Weaving is not a full time occupation for Fernanda. She is also an elementary school teaching assistant at one of the reservation grade schools for most of the year. She currently is in a long term relationship with Lester Quanimptewa a Hopi katsina carver, (he is in the photo with her). She has several members of her family who are also into the arts and crafts, brothers Jimmy Gail Honanie, Aaron Honanie, Ernest Honanie, are doll carvers. Sister Hallie Honanie is a silversmith and nephew Antone Honanie is both a silversmith and old style katsina carver. Fernanda's baskets are very detailed and finely woven. The subject matter of her pieces is routinely of the Hopi world. She rarely will incorporate images from beyond her cultural roots. As can be seen in the photo Fernanda also enjoys working with gourds. The sample shown is a canteen with a frog motif and decorated with feathers and another image on the back side.
