Alicia Nelson
Born in the Shiprock, New Mexico, Alicia was raised in a traditional Navajo home. She learned to weave Navajo rugs as she was growing up but was really unaware of the tradition of Navajo basket weaving until she met her future husband. After graduating from Red Mesa High school, she attended one year at the San Juan campus of the College of Eastern Utah and it was here that she met Jonathan Holiday. Jonathan's mother, Mary Holiday Black is a well known Navajo basket weaver and it was she who taught Alicia. Mary won the National Endowments Arts Heritage Award and fellowship in 1995.
Alicia has not been weaving baskets for very long, however she is rapidly becoming known for her detail and quality. She will no doubt become one of the more sought after basket weavers as her work becomes better known by collectors. There are few basket weavers who can do the intricate patterns she is already bcome adept at producing.
